Some of the things I remember about Grandma Beaute are -
by Wendy "Nason" Watson - July 2000
Smelling Salts - she always carried them in her purse.
She would make you drink cod liver oil
She loved the smell of cigars and would burn them her stove.
She had a glass of wine each evening.
She put raw eggs and honey in her hot tea.
She always had a knitting or crocheting project going, always making us
slippers.
She would only wear one kind of slippers, and we would have to go looking
all over for them.
She had big bunions on both feet.
She loved religion and would invite anyone in to discuss the bible.
She loved playing canasta and we would all gather around the table to
play.
She loved her flowers and garden, I remember she buried all of her
garbage.
She would work in her yard for hours.
She used to turn her TV off with a broom so she didn't have to get out of
bed.
She used to like to watch Amos and Andy.
She would let me lay on the bed with her and watch TV.
She curled her long hair up into a roll using scissors.
She would brush my hair and let me brush hers.
She let me play with and wear her old beads.
She would play house with me and made us tea and we would have cookies.
She would let me write letters and do my homework using her secretary.
She would help me with my spelling words.
She had a wringer washer on the back porch and would let me help.
She had a tiny bathtub and a tiny refrigerator.
She had clothes hanging on the back of every door.
She had a dog-named Dot, I remember a cat, and two ducks at one time.
She always wore and apron.
She always had lifesavers in her purse or pocket for you.
She never threw away a paper towel (or so it seemed).
She would sing and play the piano, she promised it to Marlene.
She taught me the keys on the piano and how to play chopsticks.
She doodled on envelopes.
She wrote her name on everything.
She always smelled like that soap..... (??)
She called everyone when I became a "young lady" and then lectured me in
her bathroom.
She would sit on her swing cuddling me and sing songs or tell me stories.
She had a gold cap on one of her front teeth.
She wore a bridge, but I can't remember if it was her top or bottom teeth.
She gave birth to our parents and raised them alone for the most part.
She always bought "Irish Sweepstakes" tickets and was going to take us
all to England when she won
She loved us all
